Theatre is the art that includes, the art that borrows from all paths of life, the art that tells stories visually, audibly, and physically; theatre is the art that builds communities. I love the theatre because of the family that one can build for themselves. The stories that are told and the ones that are created through the theatrical process are stories that live on through us, through the stage, and through literature.
A friend of mine once told me that to do great theatre you have to work with great theatre artists. To do great theatre you have to study under the best, and with those that will introduce you to the masses. To do great theatre, you must work at the great theater's in the country. This is not theatre! Theatre is the art of collaboration...theatre is what happens when people communicate joys, sorrows, struggles, journeys, and so many other things. To do great theatre you must have heart, vision, friends, a community of artists...to do great theatre you must push beyond the nuts and bolts of the conventional art, of the conventional life, of the conventional world. To do great theatre you must share yourself with others in a way that unlocks the mystery of the oral. Telling stories that enrich and inform the lives of those around the production and especially of those that experience the production.
I want to do great theatre...I want to make great theatre...and so, I have chosen to attend UMASS, where the people have heart, where the people share their lives, where the theatre lives through the community. I will make great theatre because of the people that share in my joys, sorrows, experience, accidents, and surprises. I will make great theatre because I will be challenged to push and to succeed.
