Arsenic and Old Lace--iv.

We worked primarily on repairing walls today. It is a slow and meticulous process. We started by removing the staples, nails, and either cutting off excess wood or adding to the pre-existing flat.

Pre-existing flat...Cleaned

I added a couple of feet on the side and top of the window to make it smaller, so we could set our window this weekend during the final stage of the set construction. Same process as before with the 1x3, glue and luan.

Glue and 1x3...

Glue and luan...

After the window was filled, Marie stripped off the old muslin and prepared the flat for a new cover. The muslin helps cover a large area so all the imperfections will disappear. More importantly it creates a surface that can be painted and re-painted for many years to come.

Marie tearing off the muslin...ARRGH!!!

Next, Marie and Anna stretched the new sheet of muslin over the surface of the flat.

Stretching the muslin...

Meanwhile, Vic was working on attaching luan to the walls and ceilings of the rolling platform for most of the day. It is a lot of work ripping down luan to the right size, especially with all of these angles to work around.

Vic attaching some more luan...Hey! What's taking so long!!!

After he finished the walls, Marie and Anna donned their swimming caps (welding hats, but they look like swimming caps) and painted the walls.

Paint is therapeutic...

By the end of the day, we had prepared about 10 flats for painting, finished the walls on the rolling unit, and made a huge mess in the shop. We cleaned most of it up, but since we are going to rip it apart again tomorrow, we just picked up enough to keep it a safe working environment. SAFETY...I think that is the most important part of working on scenery for a theatre production. Always taking our time, being careful not to make a mistake, not inure ourselves, and looking out for those we are working with. I see a safety challenge about every 20 minutes or so each day. Usually we get ourselves out of it pretty well, but any time we take up a tool we have a challenge. So, if you're working with tools keep it safe and keep it fun!
