Here is a picture of our auditorium at Smith College where New Century Theatre hosts its summer stock season. I will take a few more shots of the surrounding areas in a few days. It really is a beautiful space with lots of room for audience members to congregate and socialize. Brick walls and lots of photos of old shows. This space was designed really well and very thoughtfully by a man or woman whom I can only guess had/s a clear sense of what is needed and wanted for audiences comfort.
The designer also got it right when they built the stage and surrounding storage areas. Fully set with a large stage, plenty of storage room for scenery upstage of the last electric, a built-in scene shop large enough to build a complete set and roll it in for quick change overs, a black box attached to the other side of the scene shop, a TV studio that could be used for any number of things (i.e. a rehearsal space), and a basement level perfect for storage. Here is a shot of the stock flats that this theatre has...
This is about 20 feet of a 6o foot wide span of flats about 15 feet deep. So, they have plenty of old scenery to choose from if they want to build a new set. Most times this summer, and from what I gather about past summers, they have been able to install whole sets without needing to build more than 15% of the needed pieces to complete a design. I won't be working at this theatre after August...I am jealous...
