We had a "Joint Studio" today at UMASS. I went in expecting to work with a batch of the designers and production team, along with some of the faculty. To my surprise (and although slightly disappointed...only because last week I understood it was only for members of the production) there were many students and faculty not directly involved in the production ready to listen and give input...
Well, within a quick 30 minutes I realized that none of the lookers on were going to give any input, and that we were just going to have a regular production meeting. This was great, but I wish we could have heard what others not involved in the process in an intimate way had to say about our approach...did they think it was good? Bad? off base...silly....not artistic in the least...vastly amazing...NO they said nothing hardly a churp from those looking on...
I think that I was so disappointed primarily because in the last two production meetings meant only for the production team we have had plenty of lookers on pipe up and offer their insight...and more insight into the production than even the majority of the production team was even giving. Needless to say, I am very disappointed with the process so far. I am hoping it is only a fluke and that things will start to shape up a little more. I want to see our team working hard, thinking intelligently and artistically about the choices we are making for this production. Where it is going and what will be put onto the stage, and how the audience will ultimately view the play is up to us, and I would like to think that we all were on the same page well before the opening of the show. Granted we still have two months, so to work we go...learning the vastly different interpretations of this play "The Imaginary Invalid"
A deeply hilarious yet tragic story of a hypochondriac seeped in lies and deceptions. His world is stale, putrid, foul from the odors of flatulence, and the rancor brought in by his duplicitous second wife and a greedy farm hand doctor. Nothing says live life to the fullest than overcoming ones maladies by becoming another persons malady...

Yeah, UMass!
A school after my own heart. Say hi to Penny for me.
When I was there, UMass had quite the feeling of family - though a lot of the faculty was going through transition at the time. So much of the school is built for undergrad interaction with grad students. Which I'm sure can be frustrating for the grads, but man... It was so great as an undergrad.
Hope I can come back and design some day.
Hey Nick...Penny says hi...she lit up like a school girl wearing braided pig tails. What kind of designs have you worked on or rather what kind of design would you like to work on...maybe we can make something happen...
